CEMEX’s Perez Talks of Company’s Condition

26 June 2009

CEMEX is a leading building materials supplier and one of the largest cement producers in the world. Founded in 1906 in the small town of Hidalgo, Nuevo Len in Mexico City, CEMEX started out as Cementos Mexicanos before it became known as CEMEX. Gilberto Perez, the current president of the CEMEX USA, has been with them since 1988. He only became president in 1998. He is a graduate of Stanford University with an MBA degree.

In his recent interview with Cement Americas, an online magazine that covers North and South American cement markets, Perez talks of CEMEX’s current state, progress and situation. For this year, the president says they will do a little bit better than other industries, because of the collaboration of two companies being put together, and their presence in over 30 states gives them some competitive advantage.

According to him, CEMEX was in good condition even during the 9/11 attacks. “When the economy started to slow down, we were in pretty good shape, and we were happy. We were having problems that we didn’t think we were going to have,” he said.

With regards to community relations in the United States, CEMEX is very sensitive to this matter and towards their operations all over the world. CEMEX spends a lot of resources in the connection with the community, more particularly in education and environmental equipment. Even CEMEX Pres. Gilberto Perez thinks that having productive relationships with communities is an extremely important asset.
