My guilty telly weakness.

3 June 2008

Shows like Gillian Mckeith’s ‘You Are What You Eat’ are my guilty pleasure. There’s something about those Channel 4 productions that I just can’t resist. Maybe it’s the scientist in me that loves the process of dissecting people’s lives and then putting them back together in a better shape.Strangely though, I can never watch these shows with another person in the room. As soon as there’s someone else there to watch the ‘victim’ cringe under the baleful eye of whichever holistic life coach is currently on, I lose all interest in the show and get a little embarrassed. Crazy eh? So, my ideal night in with, for example, a health program is as follows: get back from work, tidy my room (how it manages to get untidy in the 15 minutes I take to get ready each morning I’ll never understand), put something yuummy and healthy on for dinner, read my book or the paper while it cooks and then, timed to perfection, sit down with my fish and two veg (Gillian would be proud!) and switch on the television just as the program of choice starts. Bliss.Television-wise, I have few other weaknesses. Reality shows that involve voting people off don’t interest me in the slightest, although I sometimes feel forced to watch them just to have something to talk about at the office. For me, it’s all about the happy ending. I love shows where the person ‘finds themselves’ or, at least, some answers to the questions they started out with. It’s also a great way to learn new stuff, like what to eat for clear skin, without actually feeling like you’re learning something.
